Portals

All portals on Earth are Legacy’s creations or are based on the data she sent to Earth as part of her distress calls.

There are many scattered around Earth—some on the surface, but most underground. Many are intermittently active, and controlled from Dark Pearl. They became intermittent when Legacy was attacked, and became partially disconnected.

Description
Even though the portals look inactive, they always maintain an active connection to Dark Pearl through the Interposer (Nexus Matrix)
Role in Story
The portals emit energy. It’s a subtle field that can be detected and interacted with psychically. It’s actually a broadcast signal, like Wi-Fi routers emit to advertise their service. Specialized equipment can hand-shake and connect to the portal, but so can certain individuals. Although some are more psychic than others by nature, the technique CAN be learned by anyone with enough training. The Umbra pagans, for example, have mastered the technique, but have only scratched the surface of the portals and Interposer’s capabilities.
Background
Secret: Legacy created the Earth portals to bring critical infrastructure back to Dark Pearl. Time travel was a critical component, which is why the portals seem to be of widely varying age (some are a few years old, others tens of thousands of years old). Legacy researched and discovered how the dynamic portal her ship used to travel to Dark Pearl malfunctioned. She used that technology to develop and deploy the portals.
Notes
Malfunction: The portals turn on, briefly at seemingly random times. These portals all connect to Dark Pearl, so sometimes things can pass through from one side to the other. Certain creatures have been known to arrive here on Earth that were never supposed to be here. We have nick-named these creatures “cryptids”.
